“Make art you care about…and lots of it..”

One of the best books I have read on the creative process is a lovely little gem called ‘Art and Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking’ by David Bayles and Ted Orland. Here are two artists who have spent years studying and considering the big questions that accompany artmaking such as ‘Why am I finding this so hard?’ ‘Why do I compare myself with others all the time?’ ‘What on earth am I doing here?’

They point out that for most people, pursuing a life of artmaking is so difficult that they quit. They tackle a lot of the reasons why we give up but conclude with something so simple that we often forget it,

“The only work really worth doing - the only work you can do convincingly - is the work that focuses on the things you care about.”
